CON: 2025 Forensic Nursing (Didactics)

The purpose of the Forensic Nursing Microcredential is to prepare nurses to provide high-quality, trauma-informed care to patients experiencing interpersonal violence using evidence-based practices. American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN)essential competencies will serve as a foundation for all educational components. Didactic SANE education and clinicals skills content will be developed according to the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) SANE Education Guidelines (IAFN, 2022) and approved by IAFN to ensure students are eligible to apply for national adolescent/adult sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) certification (SANE-A). The course is also approved by the Texas Office of the Attorney General (OAG)Sexual Assault Prevention and Crisis Services (SAPCS) program to ensure students are eligible for state adolescent/adult SANE certification (CA-SANE). The Strangulation Assessment Simulation will follow IAFN Intimate Partner ViolenceEducation guidelines (IAFN, 2020). The course includes a total 165 hours divided into 5 course content milestones (and a final non-CE milestone of achieving Texas state SANE certification).

Target Audience

The course is designed for registered or advanced practice nurses looking for specific education and training for the specialized care for patients who are experiencing acute and long-term health consequences associated with victimization or violence, and/or have unmet evidentiary needs relative to having been victimized or accused of victimization.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • CLO1: Demonstrate therapeutic communication and establishing a caring relationship (Essentials 2.1, 2.2).  
  • CLO 2: Apply current nursing knowledge to the context of medical forensic examination (MFE) and demonstrate competency of medical forensic skills in the care of patients experiencing interpersonal violence (Essential 2.3).  
  • CLO 3: Apply the nursing process and use of clinical judgment in the conduct of MFEs (Essentials 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7).  
  • CLO 4: Demonstrate self-care management due to high potential for vicarious traumatization and burnout in working with this patient population (Essential 2.8). 
  • CLO 5: Provide appropriate follow-up and referral information (Essential 2.9).  
  • CLO 6: Communicate in a manner that facilitates a partnership approach to quality care delivery (Essential 6.1). 
  • CLO 7: Demonstrate respectful communication with and about allied professionals engaged in or potentially engaged in the patient’s care or legal case (Essential 6.4).
