Mobility Changes and Impact with Aging
Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults, affecting 1 in 4 Americans over 65 each year. This module explores the key factors influencing mobility with aging, evidence-based tools for assessing fall risk, and interprofessional strategies to help older adults maintain their independence.
As we age, mobility becomes increasingly complex, shaped by the interplay of physical, sensory, cognitive, and environmental factors. Normal aging brings predictable changes to muscles, joints, balance, and vision, while conditions like osteoporosis and dementia can accelerate that decline.
Target Audience
This interprofessional module is developed for physicians, nurses, mid-level providers, public health professionals, and social workers.
Learning Objectives
After this training, learners will be able to:
- Compare mobility changes that may occur with normal aging AND impairments related to common health conditions.
- Perform mobility and fall risk screening and assessment for older adults using evidence-based tools.
- Describe interprofessional, team-based approaches to address mobility for aging adults with and without prevalent comorbidities.
- Apply appropriate recommendations for assistive devices to support transfers and mobility needs.
