Inaugural North Texas Regional Symposium: Medicine & Meaning: A Symposium on Religion & Health
Description
Registration with continuing education credit is $25
The Thursday (2/19/26) plenary session introduces the central ethical and clinical themes of the symposium by examining the role of hope in medicine, particularly in contexts of serious illness and end-of-life care. Drawing on philosophical and religious theory, narrative ethics, and chaplaincy practice, the session explores how hope functions as a constitutive element of patient identity rather than a form of cognitive error or denial. The speakers will challenge common clinical assumptions that frame hope as something to be corrected or eliminated in favor of prognostic alignment, arguing instead that such approaches can undermine trust, exacerbate conflict, and erode therapeutic relationships. The session emphasizes how healthcare practitioners can honor patient hope while remaining clinically honest, ethically grounded, and attentive to medical realities.
Target Audience
This program is open to all healthcare professionals who work in primary care, healthcare institutions and academia. Continuing education credit is available for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, licensed professional counselors and public health professionals.
