JLW: 2025-2027 Understanding Alzheimer's Diseases and Related Dementias
The Understanding Alzheimer's Diseases and Related Dementias course is part of the Dementia Specialist Certification project. The purpose of the Dementia Specialist Certification project is to provide education and support to direct care healthcare professionals. Certificate training will be offered through asynchronous modules housed on an advanced learning management system supplemented by synchronous virtual training sessions. Training will meet the State of Texas training requirements for nursing home annual dementia training hours and assisted living dementia training for newly hired direct care and supportive care employees. To support career advancement, training will also be expanded so that learners can progress across three levels of specialization.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for: physician assistants, nurses, social workers, physical therapists, Texas-licensed professional counselor, and public health professionals.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
- Describe the most common types of dementia including Alzheimer's Disease, Vascular Dementia, Lewy Body Dementia, Frontotemporal Dementia, Mixed Dementia, and Mild Cognitive impairment.
- Explain the different symptoms and characteristics of each defined dementia.
- Identify best practices in care to help manage symptoms of dementia.
