Grace Sesma, Traditional Cultural Training
Grace Alvarez Sesma, a practitioner of Traditional Indigenous Medicine, brings a unique blend of her family’s Yaqui cultural knowledge and Zapotec and Mexika healing traditions to her consulting and private healing practice. Her dedication as a cultural educator is evident in her close collaboration with mental health therapists and other healthcare providers, fostering a deeper understanding of Mexican and Indigenous culture-specific health interventions.
As a cultural educator, Grace provides culturally relevant psychological and spiritual counsel and support to Mexican/Chicano/Native and Non-Native individuals through private sessions in her clinical practice. In the workplace, she works with individuals and organizations affected by problems arising from cultural differences. Grace shares knowledge of traditional concepts and beliefs, protocols, spirituality, and healing practices; Advises on how aspects of traditional cultures can be compatible with requirements of the contemporary workplace; and provides opportunities for management and staff to become knowledgeable about and sensitive to, the historical experiences of Indigenous peoples of Mexico, United States, and Canada, and their contemporary situation as well as the vision they have for themselves and their community.

In 1993, Grace was honored with the prestigious leadership fellowship award from the National Hispana Leadership Institute in collaboration with Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Her contributions to the book Voices of the Ancestors: Xicanx and Latinx Spiritual Expressions and Healing Practices and her roles in various organizations such as the Kanap Kuahan (Tell the Truth) Coalition, the House of the Moon (Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women), the Consciousness & Healing Initiative (CHI) Practitioners Council, and the Association of Integrative Health & Medicine BIPOC Committee, are a testament to her expertise and commitment to serving her community. Her induction to the MeCHA Mural at Chicano Park - San Diego in 2024 acknowledges her contribution to cultural preservation.
