Yvette Miller, M.D.
Dr. Yvette Marie Miller is the Executive Medical Officer for the American Red Cross. She has had a long career with Red Cross, serving in various leadership capacities including regional Medical Director and Director of Automated Collections and Clinical Services. Dr. Miller is a nationally recognized expert and sought after speaker on issues related to blood donor eligibility, recruitment, and donor retention in the African American community to support the transfusion needs of patients with Sickle Cell Disease. Her other areas of focus include equitable access to blood donation for underrepresented communities and leading conversations on addressing structural racism and bias and the impact on access to healthcare.
Dr. Miller was the recipient of the 2021 Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB) President’s Award for her active role and leadership in addressing structural racism and bias in healthcare, focusing on health disparities related to treating Sickle Cell Disease and recommending how AABB can actively work to address health inequities in blood banking and promote equitable access to blood donation by underrepresented communities. In 2022, she received the NIH Department of Transfusion Medicine Dr. Richard J. Davey Lectureship award presented to individuals who have significantly advanced the field of transfusion medicine. She was the winner of the Valued Ally category of the 2022 Seramount Employee Resource Group (ERG) Impact Awards for her work with Umoja, the ARC African American ERG partnering with the other resource groups to help all communities thrive. Dr. Miller is the co-chair of the Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine (AIHM) BIPOC Committee, which was created in June 2020 to serve as a catalyst for meaningful transformation towards racial equity in integrative health. She is a member of the AABB Donor History Task Force (DHTF) and was the chair of the Gender-Neutral Issues Subgroup. Dr. Miller is the chair of the American Society for Apheresis (ASFA) Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. For her advocacy work with the LGBTQI+ community, she was recognized by the American Red Cross Tiffany Circle to receive the 2023 Charlotte, N.C. Pride Magazine outstanding professional excellence Award. Dr. Miller was recently appointed to the HHS Advisory Committee on Blood and Tissue Safety and Availability (ACBTSA). The ACBTSA is a 29-member federal advisory committee that provides advice to the Secretary of Health and Human Services through the Assistant Secretary for Health on a range of policy issues related to blood, blood products, and tissues.
