David Farmer, PhD, LPC, LMFT, FNAP

Dr. Farmer is the Executive Director of Interprofessional Practice and Behavioral Health providing leadership in the integration of interprofessional practice and behavioral health in HSC Health’s primary care clinics as part of the institution’s Whole Health initiative. A Co-Preceptor with Family Medicine Residents and third year medical students, Dr. Farmer helps teach the integration of behavioral health in Family Medicine. A Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Dr. Farmer maintains an active practice in HSC Health’s Family Medicine clinic. Dr. Farmer served as the Founding Director of the Department of Interprofessional Education and Practice at UNTHSC from 2012 to 2021. An Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Education and Health Systems Science at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Farmer teaches skills development in clinical communication and emotional intelligence with 1^st and 2^nd year medical students. An Executive Committee Member in the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium (TCMHCC) and UNTHSC PI, he oversees UNTHSC’s TCMHCC research projects. He is a founding institutional member, IPE Fellow, and member of the Board of Directors of the Texas IPE Consortium. Dr. Farmer is a Distinguished Scholar Fellow and Chair-Elect of the Psychology Academy within the National Academies of Practice. He began his service at UNTHSC in 2009 as the Director of the Reynolds Geriatrics Education and Training in Texas Program working to integrate geriatrics training in medical school, residency and continuing medical education curriculum. Dr. Farmer came to UNTHSC with twenty-three years’ experience in the clinical practice of counseling psychology.
