JPS/UNTHSC: 2022-24 Intersection of Intimate Partner Violence and HIV - Module 1 of 2
The intersections between HIV and IPV are critical to address when trying to enhance both violence and HIV prevention efforts and improve health outcomes for survivors. Based on findings from the Technology Enhanced Screening and Supportive Assistance(TESSA) training evaluations, there is low knowledge and awareness of the intersection of IPV and HIV among healthcare professionals and IPV service providers. Additionally, healthcare providers in primary care settings have limited capacity in using motivational interviewing and dialogue skills to engage patients to discuss sexual health negotiations within the context of an abusive relationship.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, certified public health professionals, social workers, physical therapists, licensed professional counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists and psychologists.
Learning Objectives
When you complete this module, you will be able to:
- Describe the incidence of intimate partner violence (IPV) and HIV in Tarrant County and North Texas.
- Explain the intersection of IPV and the risk of acquiring HIV.
- Identify healthcare professionals' role in recognizing an individual's need for IPV and HIV support services.
