CHW: 2026-2028 Health Literacy 101

Overview

 

This activity will prepare community health workers to connect to people in the community and understand their health care needs. As well as ways to help community members access the available health resources. Many deaths and events of serious harm happening in U.S. healthcare are preventable. These poor health outcomes happen for several reasons. These reasons include the Non-Medical Drivers of Health (NMDOH). NMDOH can be a lack of access to healthy food, limited access to health care, and low income. They can also include culture, language, education, and low health literacy. CHWs connect people in the community with easy to understand health information.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for community health workers.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity leaners should be able to:

1. Discuss the the non-medical drivers of health and how they impact the health outcomes in the community.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of barriers to communication and understanding of how to facilitate health protective behaviors.

3. Employ effective strategies to help clients reduce their barriers through health-literate communication.
