AIHM-FIWH 121: Intro to Mind-Body Medicine in Practice
There are many ways of understanding and relating to the terms “mind”, “body”, and“ spirit”(MBS). It is important that we have clarity on these different perspectives if we are to develop effective and cohesive approaches to healing that include aspects of “mind, body, and spirit”. Most importantly, we understand and be able to articulate our particular perspective on the mind, body, and spirit, whilst also understanding the perspective of other traditions.
In this module, we start by exploring “Western” perspectives on the mind. We discover that the “Western” concept of “mind” has undergone several mutations over the course of the last two thousand years. Inevitably, our Western medicine has been inextricably woven into, and shaped, each of these “philosophies” of mind. Rather than representing distinct epochs, these widely divergent Western philosophies of mind have run a parallel course and can still be identified in contemporary society. Our patients embody these different perspectives as they shape their experience of their illness and their path to healing.
