AIHM-FIWH 121: Common Dietary Supplements
In this section, we will start out by first answering the question, "What is a dietary supplement?" Furthermore, why do healthcare providers need to have knowledge about dietary supplements? What role do healthcare providers play in educating others about dietary supplement use?
As we consider our answers to these questions, other foundational knowledge about dietary supplements is presented, including:
- Definitions and regulations
- Who uses dietary supplement and why
- Interpretation of dietary supplement labels
Assessing the nutritional status of Americans can sometimes be confusing. On one hand, we are told that a healthy diet can provide all the necessary vitamins and minerals our bodies need. On the other hand, many individuals are still not meeting their nutritional needs. So how do we advise others on safe supplement use? In this module, we will be exploring the characteristics of a high-quality, safe supplement.
The specific topics covered include:
- Adverse events that can occur with dietary supplement use
- High risk situations and special populations
- How and why to report adverse events
- Quality control of dietary supplements
- How to choose a supplement
