Margaret Bassett, LPC-S

Margaret Bassett, LPC-S, is the Director of Applied Research & Innovative Instruction at the Institute on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault (IDVSA), The University of Texas at Austin, and the owner of IPV Training & Consulting. With over 40 years of experience in the field of interpersonal violence, she specializes in training, consulting, and expert testimony on intimate partner violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, stalking, trauma, safety planning, risk assessment and strangulation. Her work includes consulting and testifying as an expert in criminal, civil, military, state, and federal legal systems. Since 2015, she has trained multi-disciplinary audiences on topics involving interpersonal violence at state, national and international levels, including extended training sessions. She provides training to attorneys, law enforcement, advocates, licensed mental health professionals, forensic nurses and other community partners. Additionally, she is an adjunct assistant professor at UT-Austin, where she has taught at both undergraduate and graduate levels and contributes as an invited speaker at UT’s School of Law and School of Social Work. She holds a master’s in counseling from Northern Illinois University and a Master's in Higher Education, leadership, and Policy from The University of Texas at Austin. Her background also includes service as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic. Her professional focus encompasses victim/perpetrator behavior, trauma, safety planning/risk assessment, strangulation, myths and misconceptions, and advancing expertise in cases involving interpersonalviolence.
