Judith Bornstein-Chau, MD

Dr. Bornstein-Chau has spent 20 years practicing medicine in Philadelphia and the surrounding area, both as a hospitalist and in Primary care. After graduating from Penn State Milton S. Hershey School of Medicine in Hershey, PA in 2005, she completed Internal Medicine Residency at Temple University Hospital in North Philadelphia. During her residency, Dr. Bornstein-Chau came to appreciate the complex interplay of the social determinants of health and chronic disease, including preventable metabolic diseases, substance use disorders and mental health, and understood that experiences within the medical system vary wildly based on environment and opportunity. Knowing that there had to be more than pills and surgeries to offer, she sought a broader application of health knowledge, and completed Andrew Weil Integrative Medicine Fellowship in 2019. It was at this time that Dr. Bornstein-Chau made the move to Primary care, working in a clinic in North Philadelphia just as the COVID pandemic emerged and changed the world. In her practice in North Philly, Dr. Bornstein-Chau began to offer mindfulness-based interventions, as well as easily-attainable lifestyle modifications which helped her patients reduce their reliance on pharmaceuticals and build self-reliance and self-confidence, empowering patients to harness their innate healing abilities. Dr. Bornstein-Chau's passion for helping her patients to understand ways to create better health outside of Western biomedical modalities was matched only by the joy she felt when her patients began to live better.
Dr. Bornstein-Chau first became involved with Integrative Medicine for the Underserved in 2018. The conference in Washington DC changed her life, and she became deeply involved with the organization. She joined the policy committee immediately, eventually becoming Co-Chair. She has also been Co-Chair of the Conference committee in 2022, 2023, and 2024. She has been a member of the Advisory Board since 2020, and has been the Board chair since 2024. Dr. Bornstein-Chau lives in Philadelphia with her husband Vinh, 15-year-old son Kien, and 5-year-old Portuguese water dog Mojo. In her free time, Dr. Chau is passionate about spending time with her family, practicing Vipassana meditation, cooking and floral design.
