AIHM-FIWH 132: Introduction to Integrative Pediatrics
In recent years, the field of pediatrics has evolved to incorporate a broader, more holistic approach to child health and well-being. Integrative pediatrics merges conventional medical practices with complementary and alternative therapies to address the full spectrum of a child’s physical, emotional, and developmental needs. This approach recognizes the importance of treating the whole child, rather than just symptoms, and emphasizes the role of lifestyle, environment, and psychological factors in overall health.
Central to integrative pediatrics is the understanding that mind-body connections play a critical role in pediatric health. Mind-body science explores how mental and emotional states influence physical health, and vice versa. In children, this connection can manifest in various ways, from the impact of stress on immune function to the benefits of mindfulness practices in managing chronic conditions.
This section will provide foundational knowledge in both integrative pediatrics and mind-body science, focusing on:
- Core Principles of Integrative Pediatrics: Understanding how integrative approaches blend traditional and complementary practices to enhance child health.
- Mind-Body Connections in Pediatrics: Exploring how emotional and psychological factors affect physical health in children and the role of mind-body interventions.
- Practical Applications: Applying integrative strategies and mind-body techniques to common pediatric conditions, promoting overall well-being and resilience.
By integrating these principles into pediatric care, healthcare providers can offer more comprehensive and personalized treatment, addressing both the physical and emotional needs of their young patients.
