AIHM-FIWH 101- Intro to Nutrition, Macronutrients and Micronutrients
This module provides an introduction and framework for understanding the benefits of a personalized approach to nutrition. You will go over the foundations of nutritional requirements including DRI’s (Dietary Reference Intakes) and proper label reading and explore the numerous factors that affect nutritional status, from relationship to food, to cultural, societal and environmental influences. You will also be provided an overview of the changes in our food and agriculture system and how the reasons for diet driven chronic diseases goes far beyond personal choices.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and social workers.
Learning Objectives
When you complete this module, you will be able to:
- Explain the basic principles of nutrition and describe how nutrition impacts overall health.
- Identify dietary patterns that can contribute to poor health status and chronic disease.
- Discuss the variety of factors that play a role in determining an individual’s nutritional status and relationship to food.
- Describe the role of our current industrial food and agricultural system plays in current chronic disease states and compromised nutritional status.
- Identify the role of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in the body.
- Recommend appropriate macronutrient proportions for individuals based on their health needs.
- Identify and describe the functions of major vitamins in the body, recognize symptoms of vitamin deficiencies, and provide appropriate recommendations for vitamin intake.
- Identify essential minerals and their roles in maintaining health, evaluate signs of mineral imbalances, and suggest appropriate strategies for managing mineral deficiencies or excesses.
