HSC Center for Older Adults: 2024-2026 Providing Nursing Care for Those Living with Dementia
This online learning module is intended for nurses and certified nursing assistants working in facilities that provide care to persons living with dementia.
This activity is a series of "mini-modules": Promotion and Support of Activity and Safe Mobility, Creating Meaningful Activities for Residents, Nonpharmacological Approaches to Behavioral Management, Dementia and Behavioral Health Medications, and Promotion of Oral Hygiene.
Each topic takes about 15 minutes to complete and you can go in and out of the activity saving your progress.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for certified nursing assistants and nurses working in facilities that provide care to patients living with dementia. Others wanting strategies and techniques to help better support persons living with dementia may also find this training helpful.
Learning Objectives
When you complete this module, you will be able to:
1. Describe the common characteristics of the stages of cognitive decline.
2. Identify and apply strategies to promote meaningful activities for individuals living with dementia.
3. Explain non-medication strategies to manage dementia-related behaviors.
4. Discuss the risks and potential benefits of using psychotropic medications in the management of dementia-related mood and behavior symptoms.
5. Employ techniques to improve oral hygiene in those experiencing dementia.
