AIS: Immunoglobulin Therapy and Vaccines: Navigating Synergies for Patient Well-Being
Administration of immune globulin (IG) preparations and certain blood products can interfere with the immune response to vaccines. Donor-derived antibodies contained in polyclonal IG preparations can inactivate certain live-virus vaccines and reduce their immunogenicity. As such, these vaccines should be deferred for varying periods of time when IG preparations have been administered. Therefore, it is important that healthcare professionals are aware of this drug-drug interaction, risk-benefit ratio, and timing of administration.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for nurses, nursing professionals, pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians who administer targeted drug delivery (TDD) via intrathecal drug delivery systems (IDDS).
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
1. Define innate and adaptive immunity, highlighting their distinct characteristics, mechanisms, and roles in the immune response.
2. Compare and contrast innate and adaptive immunity in terms of their speed of response, specificity, memory, and the types of immune cells and molecules involved.
3. Explain the principles of immunoglobulin (IG) therapy and its role in passive immunization, emphasizing its use in managing immunodeficiency disorders and autoimmune diseases.
4. Discuss vaccine recommendations for patients receiving IG therapy, considering factors such as vaccine type (live attenuated vs. inactivated), timing of administration, and potential interactions.
5. Explore strategies for optimizing vaccine responses in immunocompromised patients, including the use of adjuvants, booster doses, and monitoring immune status post-vaccination.
