AIS: Administration Pearls -Targeted Drug Delivery and Immune Globulin Therapies

Targeted drug delivery (TDD) via intrathecal drug delivery systems (IDDS) have emerged as a valuable treatment option for patients with chronic pain who have failed to achieve adequate relief with conventional therapies. These systems provide targeted delivery of medications directly to the cerebrospinal fluid, resulting in improved pain control and reduced systemic side effects. Immunoglobulin is a pooled antibody, administered intravaneously or subcutaneously, and a biological agent used to manage various immunodeficiency states and a plethora of other conditions, including autoimmune, infectious, and inflammatory states. However, the use of IDDS and immune globulin therapies are not without potential complications and considerations that must be addressed to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Device malfunctions, including pump failure, catheter issues, and electronic problems, adverse reactions and medication-related side effects must be monitored and addressed. The education session will discuss best practices for enduring the safe administration of these therapies.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for nurses, nursing professionals, pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians who administer targeted drug delivery (TDD) via intrathecal drug delivery systems (IDDS).

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify all types of intrathecal pumps at the completion of the presentation.

  2. Describe basic mechanics and mechanism of action for each type of intrathecal pump.

  3. Define flow rate and calculate.

  4. Summarize the required processes in the Registered Nurse Home Refill visit.

  5. Explain flow rate dependency in the context of the intrathecal pump and patient response to therapy.

  6. Describe the difference between a peripheral and central vascular access device.

  7. Identify the types of peripheral and central vascular access devices.

  8. Summarize why certain supplies are needed for each type of vascular access device.

  9. Outline the importance in assessment. care. and maintenance of vascular access devices to prevent/manage complications.
