
HSC Health: 2023-25 Improving Lives - Addressing STIs in a Person-Centered Manner
This course is intended to equip the healthcare team to improve the identification, reporting, and treatment of several common sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This learning activity describes transmission rates, populations affected, signs and symptoms, incubation periods, specimen collection, treatment, and reporting to Health Authorities.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, certified public health professionals, social workers, licensed professional counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists, and psychologists.
Learning Objectives
When you complete this module, you will be able to:
- Recall the 2023 Texas notable sexually transmitted infections (STIs) required by Texas law to be reported and when they must be reported.
- Recognize STIs (e.g. chlamydia and gonorrhea) with associated signs and symptoms.
- Identify health disparities related to STI screening and treatment.
- Explain prevalence and screening recommendations for STls across populations.
- Recognize the proper specimen collection techniques for oral and rectal swabbing for STIs.
- Apply the three steps of documenting an STI to meet quality measure requirements.
- Identify the five steps of submitting a lab order for an STI test to meet quality measure requirements.
- Describe ways a healthcare team can work together to improve chlamydia and gonorrhea screening and treatment for sexually active individuals.
