2023-25 Leading a Health Literate Healthcare Organization

Health literacy is a product of the health literacy-related demands and complexities of the health care system. System changes are needed to align health care demands better with the public’s skills and abilities to ensure care and instructions are understood and actionable. This course aims to familiarize healthcare leaders with the concept of a Health Literate Healthcare Organization and the actions needed to become one.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, licensed professional counselors, physical therapists, public health professionals, and social workers.

 

Learning Objectives

When you complete this module, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of organizational barriers to patient communication related to health literacy.
  • Employ effective strategies to help reduce barriers and enable individuals' ability to equitably find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others.
  • Identify the Institute of Medicine's 10 Aspirational Attributes employing health literacy practices needed to become a Health Literate Healthcare Organization.
