HSC Center for Older Adults: 2023-25 Part 2: Advocating for Independence – Assessing Capacity, Mistreatment, and Social Determinants of Health

Having dementia does not always mean a person cannot make decisions for themselves. Being over 95 does not always mean a person cannot live alone successfully.  In this module, we will explore how healthcare team members can advocate for their older adult patients to ensure they can live in the least restrictive environment, safely maintain their independence to the degree possible, and enjoy life to the fullest.  This goal will be considered over two training modules.

Part 1 covered assessing decision-making capacity. Part 2 will cover identifying risks for older adult mistreatment and the influence of social determinants of health.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, and public health professionals.

Learning Objectives

When you complete this module, you will be able to:

  • Define and identify five elder mistreatment subtypes and risk factors.
  • Identify healthcare team resources for addressing mistreatment and social determinants of health.
  • Compare and contrast how the five social determinants of health areas can impact health outcomes in two similar patient case examples.
