Dementia in Corrections: Forgotten Behind Bars (Center for Older Adults 2026-2028)
Overview
This program aims to equip healthcare professionals, correctional staff, and other stakeholders with the knowledge and tools needed to address the unique, often forgotten needs of incarcerated older adult patients, especially those with dementia. It will emphasize the importance of compassionate, evidence-based healthcare to promote the well-being, dignity, and respect of the older adult patient, as well as highlight the added vulnerabilities of incarcerated older adults with dementia.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, public health professionals, and social workers.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Review the various types of dementia, early signs of cognitive decline, and the unique vulnerabilities of patients with dementia.
- Describe standardized screening tools and how to conduct cognitive assessments.
- Discuss effective communication strategies aimed at de-escalation during potential crises.
- Value the role of dementia education across professions within the correctional setting.
