Overview

Primary Care teams encounter psychiatric conditions daily. Many primary care teams would like to have knowledge of psychotherapy skills that can be implemented when needed to their patients. There is an interest in increasing knowledge regarding management of certain types of mental health issues and how to document appropriately. This interprofessional series will target psychotherapy basic skills, suicidal risk assessments, substance use disorders, mood disorders, treatment approaches, and ethical implications in psychiatric treatment. This series aims to increase knowledge, skills, and the ability to apply newly acquired skills of psychiatric patient care.

Series Objectives

Upon completion of this activity leaners should be able to:

• Identify the steps in using supportive and cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy techniques. 
• Integrate supportive and cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy techniques into treatment strategies with patients. 
• Implement a strategy to approach the suicidal and self-harming patient.
• Assess a patients appropriate for psychiatric referral.
• Describe the factors needed to document when psychotherapeutic interventions occur.
• Identify the availability of mental health resources the patient has in their community.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, certified public health professionals, social workers, physical therapists, and licensed professional counselors.
