Overview

This monthly journal club series supports forensic nurses in reading, interpreting, critically appraising, and applying original research to forensic nursing practice. Each one-hour session will focus on a peer-reviewed forensic nursing practice-related article and include facilitated discussion of the study’s methods, statistical findings, strengths, limitations, and implications for evidence-informed practice.

Series Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. Identify the purpose, design, population, methods, findings, and practice implications of original research articles relevant to forensic nursing practice.

2. Interpret common research and statistical concepts presented in forensic nursing research, including study design, sampling, measures, outcomes, statistical significance, confidence intervals, limitations, and potential sources of bias.

3. Critically appraise the quality, rigor, relevance, and limitations of original research articles using a structured discussion or appraisal approach.

4. Evaluate whether research findings are applicable to forensic nursing practice, considering the strength of the evidence, patient population, clinical context, feasibility, ethical considerations, and potential impact on patient care or forensic outcomes.

5. Discuss how current research may inform forensic nursing assessment, documentation, evidence collection, patient education, referrals, interdisciplinary collaboration, policy, or practice standards.

6. Differentiate between findings that support immediate practice consideration, findings that require cautious interpretation, and findings that identify the need for additional research.
