This session will cover topics unique to caring for persons living with dementia across the disease trajectory. Palliative care is appropriate for persons with serious illness, such as dementia, especially as the disease progresses to more advanced stages.

 

Objectives are:

  • Review the Medicare Hospice Admission Guidelines for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias
  • Evaluate the benefits and limitations of medications for dementia, including medications for symptom management
  • Explain the reasons behind recommending against artificial nutrition and hydration in persons with advanced dementia
  • Discuss the principles of beneficence and non-maleficence in the setting of caring for persons living with dementia who have limited decision-making capacity.
