TCOM: 2022-24 Partnering with Vaccine Hesitant Patients
Healthcare professionals have reported experiencing decreased job satisfaction because of time spent in patient encounters with significant vaccine concerns. Some have dealt with this problem in a few ways, such as:
- Scheduling longer well-care visits, with some loss of overall efficiency;
- Simply not having discussions about vaccines;
- Acceding to a parent’s request to defer, delay, or skip a vaccination.
53% of physicians spend 10 to 19 minutes discussing vaccines with concerned parents, and 8% of physicians spend 20 minutes or more with these parents. The C.A.S.E. method is an evidenced-based method that is efficient and effective in navigating conversations with vaccine-hesitant persons.
This module is primarily intended for physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. However, this is not just an issue for physicians; other health professionals within the ambulatory clinic setting are also questioned by patients and caregivers about vaccines. Although these individuals do not prescribe the vaccine, each is in a position to support the well-being of the patients served.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for primary care physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners.

When you complete this module, you will be able to:
- Identify the historical context of vaccine hesitancy.
- Examine underlying reasons for vaccine hesitancy.
- Describe the advantages of the C.A.S.E. tool when talking with vaccine-hesitant patients and caregivers.
- Apply the C.A.S.E. tool to patient scenarios.
