JPS/UNTHSC: 2022-24 Intersection of Intimate Partner Violence and HIV - Module 2 of 2

Intimate partner violence (IPV) and HIV/AIDS are co-occurring pandemics affecting millions of women and young girls worldwide. Addressing the intersection of these two pandemics is key to lessening the harm caused by both pandemics. However, most healthcare professionals and IPV service providers are unaware of the links between IPV and HIV and the related consequences associated with this intersection.  Healthcare professionals, particularly in primary care settings, have an opportunity to discuss sexual health within the context of an abusive relationship.

This second module in the series focuses on communication with trauma-informed care principles and motivational interviewing techniques. Through awareness and action, we can improve the health outcomes for survivors.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, certified public health professionals, social workers, licensed professional counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists, and psychologists.

Learning Objectives

When you complete this module, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the incidence of intimate partner violence (IPV) and HIV in Tarrant County and North Texas.
  2. Explain the intersection of IPV and the risk of acquiring HIV.
  3. Identify healthcare professionals' role in recognizing an individual's need for IPV and HIV support services.
  4. Use trauma-informed motivational interviewing and listening skills to discuss IPV risk factors and empower patients to make informed decisions about health and safety.
