A native Virginian, Dr. Pickell is both an ordained Presbyterian minister and a physician. He holds a BA in American History from the College of William and Mary in Virginia, an M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary and his M.D from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. After completing a combined residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson he practiced in Nashville, TN for a year before returning to Texas to start his own practice.
In 2012 he was asked to become the president and medical director of Health-e-Care, a primary care practice with an extensivist track that provides enhanced services for chronically ill patients. He serves on or chairs numerous boards and committees, mostly related to ethics, at the local and state levels and is currently leading a state-wide initiative to advance the POLST paradigm in Texas.
