Presentation Summary

Physician burnout has reached endemic across the world including the US especially over the last 5 years. According to the current data of burnout in the US medical community, 50-75% of residents, 55% of physicians, and 56% medical students nationally experienced “burnout syndrome” characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of personal accomplishment. It was reported that other healthcare providers such as dentists, nurses, and social workers are also significantly burnout by 81%, 10-70%, and up to 73%, respectively.

In this presentation, the participants will 1) understand the prevalence, origins and scope of physicians and health providers burnout; 2) review the literature of individual and organizational interventions that mitigate burnout and recognize the importance of personal wellness promoting strategies; and 3) develop an action plan to prevent burnout and promote wellness based on the mind-body connection, cognitive behavioral and solutions-based techniques, and fitness and movement. This information can be applied to support all healthcare providers and general population to get benefit for their burnout prevention and wellness promotion.
